| Description | A fuzzy blue (wool?) "Donald Duck" sailor's hat, with black velvet hat band. Cap band of "S.S. GEORGE WASHINGTON" is loosely stitched over the band. The band is woven, with an American flag on one end, and a blue, two-pointed flag with "U S | L" on a white disc on the other. There are a pair of female snaps, of unknown use, on each side of the headband. In the crown is a faint stamp, believed to be from "L. Bamberger & Co.", the sixth-largest department store in the U.S. in 1929, when it was purchased by Macy's. It remained under its own brand for decades after. The S.S. George Washington was a ocean liner built for the German shipping firm, Norddeutscher Lloyd. At the time of her launch, in 1908, only the Lusitania and Mauritania were bigger. The cap band was from the period of 1921-1931, when the S.S. George Washington was operated by the United States Lines, along with other formerly-German ships. She was operated as a troop ship by the British under Lend-Lease during WWII, as well as the US Navy and Army, after retrofitting her boilers for oil firing, as the British found she was too slow with the coal-fired boilers. Associated with Child's heavy chinchilla wool pea coat. |
