Name Turret Clock, John De Denne, Cheltenham

Catalog ID HCM5514
Year 1836
Description A two-train, posted frame, tower (turret) clock, with deadbeat excapement. Acorn finials on the cast iron frame.

One of three which Mrs. Henry Thompson commissioned John De Denne to make in 1836 for the churches of St. Paul, St. John, and St. James, in Cheltenham, England. This is likely the clock from St. John's, as the assets of that church were liquidated before it was demolished in 1967. The other two buildings are still standing.

The hammer lever was installed upside-down, as seen in the auction and my original photos. This is presumably to prevent it from being hit while sticking out, and damaging the striking train.

There is one uknown component, made of iron, on a thin steel strip, with a coil spring. It appears to be interfering with the going train. It is apparent in photos 3 and 6.

The fly fits on a threaded arbor with a hole, but there is no nut or pin. The threading may be later (?). I will need to make a nut and/or pin.

The escapement bushings may need to be tightened, in order to raise the arbor and prevent the pallets from colliding with the the teeth.

Assembly marks at joints and bolts, using a series of dots.

Estimated to weigh 250lbs. No weights, hands, or face. Setting dial is thick cast brass, engraved "The Gift of | Mrs. Henry Thompson | 1836 | Made by | John De Denne | Cheltenham".

Came with six wrenches. One is unmarked and hand-forged, possibly original?

My work:
Made a brass collar with (straight) steel pin for the fly shaft.
