Name "View of the Imperial Park at Gehol" pattern plates (7)

Catalog ID HCM5497
Year circa 1810-1815
Description Set of seven blue transfer-printed earthenware plates, made by Davenport Pottery. Marked on the bottom, "Davenport", in an arch.

The scene, "View of the Imperial Park at Gehol", was first published as an engraving in 1806 in John Barrow's "Travels in China." Sherds of this pattern were discovered at the home of President James Madison (1751-1836), Montpelier, by archeologists, along with sherds from another Davenport transferware pattern, "Bamboo & Peony". This mark appears to be earlier than (at least) the mark shown on the Montpelier website, which is in all capital letters, with an anchor, as used throughout the mid-19th Century.

Davenport produced earthenware and porcelain in Longport, Staffordshire between 1794 and 1887.

The future George IV commissioned a set of porcelain from Davenport in 1806.
