Collections Online->Antiques ->Furniture ->Chests

Name Bow front Federal Sheraton chest, Henry or John Wells
Catalog ID HCM4039
Year circa 1815
Description Four drawer curved-front chest with turned legs and front columns. Drawers are lined in "Norwich Courier" newspapers circa 1815. Wooden two-piece knobs. Space at back of top may indicate it had a backsplash.

Typewritten note inside second drawer:
"This maghony [sic] bureau was made by either grandfather John Ward Wells (1794-1872) or his father Henry Wells (1753-1823). Thse ancestors lived on the old homestead at North [crossed out?] Woodstock and when they were not farming, they practiced cabinet making.

This bureau came into the possession of my aunt Mrs. Louis [crossed out and "Luis"? - probably Lewis Judson Wells] J. Wells. She knew I was interested in old furniture, particularly that which had belonged to the family and she sold me this bureau before she left Woodstock to go West to live with her son, Frank.
