Name "The New England Primer, Improved", Holdship, Pittsburgh, 1827

Catalog ID HCM4512
Year 1827
Description "The | New-England | Primer, | Improved | or, | an easy and pleasant | Guide to the Art of Reading. | To which is added, | The Assembly's Catechism. | ~~~~~~~~ | Sterotyped by A Chandler & Co | ~~~~~~~~ | PITTSBURGH; | Published by H. Holdship | 1827."

The cover is similar to the title page, but includes "D. & M. Maclean, prs." above the date.

Rear cover is an advertisement looking for "Rags, Scutching Tow, and Tanners' Scraps", as raw materials for Holdship's manufacture of several types of paper and card. The firm was producing more than 12,000 reams per year in a mill powered by a 30hp steam engine by this time, so it's likely it's printed on this paper, which likely would have had an anchor watermark. (See: "American Paper Mills 1690-1832" pp81-82).

Small book with printed card covers. Binding tight, but might have a later spine (?). 63 pages.

Signature at bottom of title page: "Rachel Grams | Book".

This is listed in "The New-England Primer - Issued Prior to 1830", but no copies where known at the time. (Heartman #451).
